French Immersion

Elementary French Immersion

Bilingual Kindergarten

All kinder classes are Bilingual classes, 50% French and 50% English.  Early years students are immersed in learning in both languages to support the acquisition of both languages at an early age.  At the end of this two year program parents make a decision to enter grade one in the French Immersion program or the English Language program (with 150 minutes of Core French per week).

Grades 1-6 Immersion

Students continuing to learn in the Immersion program will have 60% or their day in French (French language, Social Studies, Arts, Physical Education and DPA) and 40% of their day in English(English Language, Mathematics and Science)

Grades 7-8 Immersion

Instruction will be 50% French and 50% English.  The Arts, particularly Music and Drama will be taught in English in these grades.

The program is designed for students who are learning the language for the first time and for those that speak and hear the language at home.  Students in the program complete EQAO assessments in grades three and six in English

The program continues in this format until the end of grade eight.

Secondary French Immersion

Valour JK-12 offers a program beginning in grade nine that extends and supports the learning from the Elementary program.

Beginning in grade nine, Students complete up to 50% of their day in French.  Students complete a French language course at each grade level and one to two more courses in French each year.

Grades are combined to ensure that we have sufficient numbers to run each class.  For example, the grade nine and ten FIF classes are combined into one class as are the grade 11 and 12 classes.  These groupings of students complete all of their French Immersion classes together.
